PNG, JPG, or WebP — which to pick
Each format trades off differently. PNG keeps every pixel exact and supports transparency, which makes it the right choice for logos, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges — but it makes for a larger file on photos. JPG is built for photos: it compresses much smaller by discarding detail a viewer won't notice, though it doesn't support transparency. WebP is newer and generally beats both at the same visual quality, with smaller files than JPG and transparency support like PNG — the main tradeoff is that a small number of older tools and apps still don't accept it.
When you'd use this
- — A site or form only accepts JPG, but your file is a PNG or WebP
- — You need transparency for a logo, so you're converting a JPG to PNG
- — You're prepping images for the web and want the smaller WebP format
- — An app exported a screenshot in a format another app won't open
Common questions
Will converting to JPG lose transparency?
Yes — JPG has no transparency channel, so any transparent areas are filled with white during conversion. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
Does converting reduce file size too?
Often, yes, especially converting a photo from PNG to JPG or WebP. If you want more control over exactly how much it shrinks, use the image compressor afterward with the quality slider.
Is there a file size limit?
No hard limit from the tool itself — since everything runs in your browser, the only real constraint is your device's memory, which comfortably handles typical photo and screenshot sizes.
